Around the World in Story Tales

 

Are you interested in taking part in a FREE primary programme which will help your school to establish international links whilst taking your pupils on a journey exploring another culture?

 

The Around the World in Story Tales programme is open to all Key Stage 2 classes from schools in Northern Ireland located in areas of high social deprivation.*

 

This programme is funded by the Department of Education Northern Ireland and British Council. It will be launched on on 16th November 2016, during International Education Week at W5 in Belfast. The programme provides opportunities for seven Key Stage 2 classes from across Northern Ireland. (£180 of funding towards transport for each visit will be provided for each school.)

 

The aims of this programme are to encourage schools to:

  • Create international links,
  • Teach young people about an alternative culture through astronomy and literacy
  • To raise the awareness of global citizenship.

 

Each participating class will be paired with a different foreign country With the help of W5 and a British Council language assistant, pupils will learn about the culture and language of the their country through storytelling and astronomy. Pupils will track the progress of their project through an online digital portfolio.

 

During this programme pupils will:

 

Part 1:                 

Attend a launch in W5 and meet their language assistant. (16th November)

Part 2:

Receive a visit to their school from W5 and a language assistant to learn about constellation stories in our Full dome Mobile Planetarium. (Dec/Jan 2016)

Part 3:        

Be guided through a series of  lessons to assist children in creating their own mythical story

Part 4:

Receive a second visit to their school from W5.   This will allow pupils to bring their stories to life through drama and script writing. (Feb/March 2016)

Part 5

Return to W5 in March to deliver their short story through drama with all participating schools and receive prizes.

*Preference will be given to schools who have not previously engaged with British Council. Further criteria will be applied if oversubscribed.
