W5 welcomed 140 pupils from schools across Northern Ireland to the eleventh annual Northern Ireland FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge on Wednesday 5 December.
The FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a global science and technology challenge for teams of students, to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers.
With this year’s theme as ‘Into Orbit’, children aged 9-16, from over 80 countries were challenged to think like scientists and engineers, whilst exploring the fascinating subject of space exploration!
19 passionate teams from across Northern Ireland worked with a team coach or STEM Ambassador mentor from sponsoring companies to build, test and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. The teams also choose and solved a real-world problem in the project.
Local schools Dalriada and Bangor Academy are amongst those who participated. Belfast High School emerged triumphant as overall champions of the 2018 FIRST® LEGO® League Northern Ireland. As regional winners, Belfast High School, have been invited to take part in the UK and Ireland National Final in Bristol in February 2019. The winner of the UK and Ireland final will then go on to compete in the World FLL Festival in the US.
Thank you to all our participating schools, team mentors and sponsors!
