FIRST® LEGO® League is an international competition for students aged 9 – 16
The challenge encourages an interest in real world themes and develops key skills that are crucial for a young person's future career.
At W5, the competition targets Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils. The competition is launched at the beginning of September and once registered, teams can begin preparing for the competition day which this year takes place at W5 on 4 December 2019. This year, for the first time, the top teams will go on to compete at the All-Ireland Finals in Dublin in March with the opportunity to reach the World Finals in Detroit USA in April.
Each year there is a focus on a different real-world topic related to the sciences. In teams of 10, students work together to research a topic area, complete a project and prepare a short presentation. The teams also design and program a LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot to complete a series of related specific tasks. Points are given for each task the robot completes in a set time.
Schools from across Northern Ireland are invited to compete, with up to 18 teams taking part each year. This year’s exciting theme is ‘CITY SHAPERS’ which is designed to inspire curiosity around architecture and STEM.
