    FIRST® LEGO® League - Belfast High School
    March 2019

FIRST® LEGO® League success from Belfast High School pupils

Last December, W5 welcomed 140 pupils from schools across Northern Ireland to the eleventh annual Northern Ireland FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge.

The FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a global science and technology challenge for teams of students which encourages an interest in real world issues and develops key skills that are crucial for their future careers.

19 passionate teams from across Northern Ireland worked with a team coach or STEM Ambassador mentor from sponsoring companies to build, test and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. The teams also chose and solved a real-world problem in the project section of the competition.

Belfast High School emerged triumphant as overall champions of the 2018 FIRST® LEGO® League Northern Ireland regional final at W5. As winners, Belfast High School were then invited to take part in the UK & Ireland National Final in Bristol. The final took place on Saturday 16 February 2019 and the team did exceptionally well, placing 12th in the Robot Game.

“Going to Bristol to compete against the best from across the UK and Ireland was so exciting for the pupils and the school. The chance to represent Northern Ireland in Detroit competing against the best from 43 different countries is a once in a lifetime opportunity! These trips are fantastic, but the real work is in the classroom at lunches or after school. The pupils have grown into a team, regardless of their different ages. They have developed friendships, grown in confidence and learnt so many transferable skills. I would strongly advise people to get involved and take advantage of the opportunity.”

Mr S Robinson, Teacher of Technology, Belfast High School

“I really enjoyed the trip to Bristol! All the teams that participated were really nice and we had loads of fun. It was amazing to have done so well and to see all the other robots the other teams had made. This competition has taught me lots about robotics and I’ve made some new friends, including some older pupils who I wouldn’t have known otherwise. I am really looking forward to competing again next year and making our robot even better!”

Luke Wilson, Year 8 pupil at Belfast High School

The team from Belfast High School have now been invited to attend the FIRST® LEGO® League World Championship in Detroit, USA at the end of April. They are now working hard, programming their robot, perfecting their presentation and fundraising to help make this dream a reality.
