    FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge
    December 2019

Young People from across NI learn about urban planning in the 2019 FLL Challenge at W5!

W5 welcomed 140 young people from across Northern Ireland to the 12th annual Northern Ireland FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge on Wednesday 4 December.

The FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a global science and technology challenge for teams of students, to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers.

With this year’s theme as ‘City Shaper’, children aged 9-16, from over 80 countries were challenged to think like scientists and engineers, whilst exploring the fascinating subject of architecture and urban planning!

Participating teams had been building LEGO®, programming their EV3 robots and researching urban planning since September and last Wednesday’s event was the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication.

19 passionate teams from across Northern Ireland worked with a team coach or STEM Ambassador mentor from sponsoring companies to build, test and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. The teams also choose and solved a real-world problem in the project.

Local schools RBAI and Belfast High School are amongst those who participated. St Louise's Comprehensive College emerged triumphant as overall champions of the 2019 FIRST® LEGO® League Northern Ireland. As winners, St Louise's Comprehensive College, have been invited to take part in the All Ireland Final in Dublin in March 2020. Good luck St Louise's Comprehensive College!
