FIRST® UK is a charity driven by young people and fuelled by industry mentors, using robots to spark the curiosity needed to explore, challenge and grow. FIRST® UK aim to make STEM more accessible and diverse – using robots and inspirational role models from industry to fuel a talent pipeline of future innovators.
Participants in FIRST® Tech Challenge learn to think, operate and collaborate like innovators – designing robots to compete in tournaments. This season FIRST® Tech Challenge have teamed up with Star Wars to be a Force for Change.
Teams of up to 15 young people from 12-18 years old, design, build and programme a robot to take on a global challenge with support from an industry mentor. Teams compete in alliances at regional tournament (held at W5) and a national championship – in a bid to represent the UK at the world championship held in the USA.
This year’s theme is FIRST RISE, powered by Star Wars: Force for Change, setting out to inspire citizens of the galaxy to work together, strengthening and protecting the Force that binds us and creating a place where collaboration and collective wisdom can elevate ideas and foster growth.
Meeting weekly for a couple of hours between September and March, teams develop technical knowhow and core life skills, engage with employers, universities and industry role models, build an understanding of STEM career pathways and roles, collaborate and compete in tournaments and achieve recognition in the form of collective awards.
