1100 x 620 FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Challenge 7

Regional Tournament Hosted at W5

W5 recently invited students aged 9-16 from schools across Northern Ireland to compete in the IET FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge UK and Ireland regional tournament.

The FIRST® LEGO® League is a global science and technology challenge, with up to 24 student teams from Northern Ireland taking part annually. The competition is aimed at Key Stage 2 and 3 students to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for future careers.

Each year there is a focus on a different real-world topic related to the sciences. This year’s exciting theme was CARGO CONNECT', which was designed to inspire curiosity around architecture and STEM.

From the initial launch at the beginning of September 2021, teams began preparing for the competition day which took place at W5 on 10 March 2022. Students worked together to research the topic area, completed a project and prepared a short presentation. The teams of ten also designed and programmed a LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot to complete a series of related specific tasks; with points given for each task the robot completed in just 2.5 minutes.

Ultimately, Wallace High School emerged as the overall champions of the 2022 FIRST® LEGO® League Northern Ireland. They will go on to compete at the International Open Tournament in Brazil, held in August this year.

Thank you to all our participating schools, team mentors and sponsors!
