W5 is proud to announce the launch of a brand-new Immersive Classroom, created in collaboration with BT and the Education Authority (EA), offering an exciting new way for schools to engage with learning.
Officially opened by Education Minister Paul Givan, the Immersive Classroom is a 5G-enabled interactive simulation space designed to support pupils of all ages and abilities. Using a powerful combination of HD projection, sensory interaction, lights, sound, and even scent, this state-of-the-art classroom brings learning to life in new ways.
Located on Level 1 of W5, Northern Ireland's award-winning science and discovery centre, the Immersive Classroom allows pupils to step into rich, interactive environments, from exploring outer space to walking through a rainforest or discovering historical landmarks.
Powered by BT’s advanced technology and delivered through the EA’s EdIS (Education Information Solutions) Programme, the Classroom features a vast content library filled with thousands of computer-generated scenarios, real-life simulations, and interactive experiences. It’s also compatible with VR, AR, and XR technologies, allowing for even deeper engagement.
At W5, accessibility and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do. That’s why this new facility will offer three designated priority days per week for Special Schools and Specialist Provisions, completely free of charge. These dedicated sessions are designed to meet the needs of young people with special educational needs, providing a calm, adaptable and stimulating environment to enhance their learning.
All schools across Northern Ireland will be able to include the Immersive Classroom as part of their educational visit to W5, with bookings opening in September 2025.
Victoria Denoon, Head of W5, said: “W5 is proud to launch this Immersive Classroom, alongside the Education Authority and BT, representing an exciting step forward in the integration of technology and education.
“This state-of-the-art multi-sensory environment offers a dynamic and inclusive Classroom where pupils can engage with bespoke content tailored to their individual learning needs and styles. Importantly, it provides meaningful support for young people with special educational needs, creating opportunities for deeper engagement and more accessible learning experiences.”
