KS1: Space Explorers

A full day of programming delivered at your school, suitable for up to 65 pupils, including space-themed icebreakers and team-building activities.

Are your students ready for an out-of-this-world experience inside W5’s portable planetarium? Take your students on an unforgettable journey through the stars to the International Space Station (ISS) and find out how astronauts survive in space. Have a go at launching a rocket, and work together to create your very own spaceCRAFT.

Learning Objectives:

By taking part in the programme, pupils will:

  • Understand how astronauts survive in space, e.g. eating, sleeping, and moving.
  • Work together to make a space-themed craft to take home.
  • Explore how forces can make things move through building and launching rockets.
  • Strengthen their teamwork, cooperation, and problem-solving skills through space-themed team-building games.
  • Build positive relationships while sharing their learning with peers.
  • Foster curiosity and excitement about space and the world around them.

Suitable for two classes of up to 65 pupils

Followed by a visit to W5, including an exhibition visit, Climbit and a Shared Education workshop.

      Costs: £375+VAT + £7.50/child for the visit to W5

      KS2: BIG Build Challenge

A full day of programming delivered at your school, suitable for up to 65 pupils (two classes), including icebreakers and team-building activities.

      1. Big Engineering Team Challenge: Wind Powered Wheels

Get ready for a fan-tastic engineering adventure in W5! In this hands-on workshop, pupils unleash their creativity and problem-solving skills as they explore forces, motion, and aerodynamics. They’ll experiment with 2D and 3D structures, then put their engineering knowledge to the test by designing and building wind-powered cars.

Working in teams, they’ll craft and mount their own paper sails before racing their creations in an exciting series of wind-powered heats! Who will harness the wind best and go the farthest?

A thrilling mix of STEM learning, teamwork, and competition - perfect for inspiring the engineers of tomorrow!

      2. Big Bridge Challenge: Bridging the Gap

In this riveting challenge filled with suspense, we put our trust in pupils to build their very own bridges!

Pupils experiment with making 2D and 3D shapes and learn about which shapes work best at absorbing heavy loads. Pupils will then work in groups to build a bridge that spans a certain distance.

In a tense but thrilling finale, the strength of each bridge is then put to the test by hanging an increasing amount of weight off the structure to see how much it can hold before it collapses!

      Learning Objectives:

By taking part in the programme, pupils will:

      • Understand how forces and motion affect moving objects.
      • Experiment with 2D and 3D structures to see how shape can affect their design’s strength.
      • Use problem-solving skills and creativity to improve their design.
      • Work effectively in mixed teams, fostering new friendships and positive relationships.
      • Develop resilience by testing prototypes, learning from mistakes, and improving designs.
      • Experience the excitement of competition in a supportive, collaborative environment.
      • Build confidence through hands-on activities.

Followed by a visit to W5, including an exhibition visit, Climbit and a Shared Education workshop.

        Costs: £375+VAT + £7.50/child for the visit to W5
