Pox, Plagues and Paupers: Horrible Histories of Belfast

Pox, plagues, cholera - all just part of life for people in 19th-century Belfast, especially the poor. How did the town cope with constant outbreaks of disease? How were the sick treated? Where did all the bodies go?

Join QUB Historian, Dr Robyn Atcheson, as she delves into what medicine was like in Victorian Belfast, how physicians and surgeons practised their skills on the dead and on the living poor. Get a look at real medical instruments & hear stories of how they were used in horrific ways to treat the sick. You can also investigate the ups and downs of the bodysnatching trade in Belfast and take a look at how pauper graves were treated then and now.
